Why Do People Resist Change in Work

Updated: May 31, 2019

People resist change but change is inevitable. What first word comes into your mind when you hear the word Change? Does change comes with fear? People react to change in different ways whether you are in business or doing virtual assistance.

Why Change?

Fear is an emotion that is subjective. It is a word that almost everyone is afraid to face.

Some may respond with fear some may respond with denial. A businessman old method of advertising a product instead of Social Media Management and Marketing fear that it will cost more. Not thinking it will generate more leads and more sales.

An office employee who has been stuck in an 8-5 job and in denial of the income a freelancer / virtual assistant can have and doing online jobs instead of being trapped in traffic.

How do we recognize if this fear is good or not?

In Spencer Johnson book, “Who Moved my Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and In Your Life," illustrates how different people deal with change using a simple story of four mice looking for cheese in a maze, the cheese represent our life’s goal.

Like the mice in the story, Johnson believes that we learned that if we’re smart, we sense our unhappiness, examine our situation and plan a course of action.

The problem is sometimes, we only make it to the planning stage. Then the fear sets in, I believe that some fear is good.

When you are afraid of things are going to get worse if you don’t do something, it can prompt you into action. It is not good when you are so afraid that it keeps you from doing anything. As an example, an employee stuck in traffic for two hours but can't shift jobs to online jobs / freelancing because afraid of the major changes like income and experiences to be encountered as virtual assistant.

How to Accept Change without fear of rejection?

In reality, 90% of our fear will not happen. Resistance to change has many reasons. Analyze the sources of resistance is the first step towards solutions. Address your fear and embrace change while the sun is still shining and don’t be stuck in old ways. Giving a chance to change from being an office employee to virtual assistance.

To conquer fear we should set goals. Goals give purpose and meaning in life. It is difficult to live without a purpose.

People change only when change is their choice. Be open to change.
